Cheaper alternatives to a storage unit
A storage unit is not always the answer. Here are the honest alternatives, what they really cost, and the situations where renting a unit works out cheaper.
Written by the Business Spaces team, who run the units on Keswick Road. Updated 10 October 2026. Our prices come from our own price list; figures about other storage come from what providers advertise publicly.
1. Clear out before you store
The cheapest space is the space you do not need. Sell, donate or recycle what you will not use again before you pay to keep it. Selling online can turn clutter into cash, and if it grows into a business, we have space for online sellers.
2. Rent a smaller space
If you only have a few boxes or a couple of pieces of furniture, a full unit is more than you need. Our first-floor storage pods (15 to 35 sq ft) will start from £10 a week and rooms (50 to 100 sq ft) from £22 a week when they open in early 2027. These are guide prices and the pods and rooms are reached by stairs.
3. Use space at home, or with family
A loft, garage or spare room costs nothing extra. The trade-offs are space, access and condition: garages can be damp, lofts are awkward to reach, and business stock at home takes over the house and keeps your home address on everything you send out.
4. Hold less stock
For a business, ordering smaller quantities more often can cut the space you need. It can cost more per item, so weigh the saving in rent against the higher unit cost.
When a unit is the cheaper choice
For a small business, a unit often replaces something more expensive rather than adding a cost:
- A bigger workshop or industrial unit. Those often come with long leases, utility accounts and supplier deposits. Ours start at one month, with electricity at cost and free Wi-Fi.
- Lost time. Stock spread across a house, a garage and a van takes longer to find and pack.
- A separate address. Tenants can use the site's address for post, deliveries and a Google Business Profile.
Ground-floor units start at £65 a week for 150 sq ft. See how our prices compare.
